School closures, insecurity, ghost towns, displacement, and fear have limited access to formal schooling and created deep learning gaps among children. In this challenging context, as we support children in these regions, we noticed that they have adopted many strategies not to be left behind as education is concerned. One of these strategies is “playful peer tutoring” which emerges as a flexible, low-cost, and psychosocially supportive approach that significantly enhance learning and resilience among affected children.

Ensures Continuity of Learning Despite School Disruptions
With frequent school shutdowns and irregular attendance, playful peer tutoring allows learning to continue beyond the formal classroom. Children can learn in small, safe groups at home, in churches, community spaces, or temporary learning centers. Peer-led play activities help maintain learning routines even when schools are inaccessible.

Reduces Trauma and Supports Psychosocial Well-Being
Many children in the Anglophone regions have experienced fear, loss, displacement, and violence. Play is a natural healing tool for children, helping them express emotions, reduce stress, and regain a sense of normalcy. When combined with peer tutoring, play creates emotionally safe spaces where children feel supported, understood, and less alone, an essential foundation for effective learning in crisis settings.

Increases Engagement in a Context of Fear and Uncertainty
Insecurity and ghost town lockdowns have led to prolonged periods of idleness and disengagement from schooling. Playful peer tutoring re-engages children through games, songs, storytelling, role-play, and creative activities. Learning becomes less intimidating and more attractive, helping children regain interest in education despite unstable conditions.

Utilizes Low-Risk, Locally Available Learning Strategies
Playful peer tutoring relies on simple, locally available materials such as stones, sticks, bottle tops, chalk, local stories, and songs. This is particularly important in conflict-affected areas where access to textbooks, digital tools, and school infrastructure is limited. Children can learn effectively without drawing attention or exposing themselves to additional risk.

Strengthens Peer Support and Community Solidarity
In crisis situations, peer relationships become vital sources of emotional and academic support. Playful peer tutoring fosters cooperation, trust, and collective responsibility among children. Older or more knowledgeable children support younger ones, reinforcing community values of solidarity and mutual care that are critical for survival and resilience in the Anglophone regions.

Addresses Learning Gaps Caused by Interrupted Schooling
Prolonged school interruptions have resulted in uneven learning levels among children of the same age. Playful peer tutoring allows individualized support within mixed-ability groups. Through repeated practice in playful contexts, children can catch up on basic literacy, numeracy, and language skills without the pressure of formal testing.

Promotes Inclusion of Displaced and Vulnerable Children
Many children in the Anglophone regions are internally displaced or have missed years of schooling. Playful peer tutoring provides an inclusive approach that accommodates children of different ages, learning levels, and backgrounds. It reduces stigma and promotes acceptance, especially for children who may feel academically behind or emotionally withdrawn.

Encourages Hope, Resilience, and a Sense of Normalcy
Beyond academic learning, playful peer tutoring restores a sense of childhood. Regular playful learning interactions give children hope, routine, and a vision of a future beyond the crisis. This emotional stability strengthens resilience and supports long-term educational recovery.

In the context of the Anglophone crisis in Cameroon which is marked by insecurity, ghost towns, and disrupted schooling, playful peer tutoring is not just an instructional strategy but a survival-oriented educational response. By combining learning, play, and peer support, it sustains education, heals emotional wounds, and strengthens resilience among children. For educators, counsellors, NGOs, and communities in the Anglophone regions, playful peer tutoring offers a practical, culturally grounded, and compassionate approach to keeping children learning even in times of crisis.

The ongoing socio-political crisis in the Anglophone regions of Cameroon has severely disrupted children’s education.
