These children 6 and 7 years were repeatedly raped by 3 boys in their neighborhood. The children confided in their friends who are attending INADESU child friendly space. And their friends advised that someone from INADESU should meet them. The children explained that their mother is hardly at home because of the nature of her work and they are left alone in the house. We finally spoke with the mother to explain what was going on, and surprisingly the mother knew and refused to do anything.
Most children and young girls are raped in our communities everyday, and the perpetrators are not punished.
From our findings from survivors and their families, these are reasons why they don’t speak out:
- The fear of what community members might say.
- The fear of stigmatisation and isolation by community members.
- They don’t trust the justice system.
- They are not financial viable to pursue any court case.
- They don’t want to ruin their image
Rape is so rampant in our communities especially in the regions affected by the armed conflict, where children and young girls are the most vulnerable to GBV.
Let’s continue raise gbv awareness to save the survivors and those who are exposed to GBV .
